WASTE DISPOSABLE - a sleeping monster
Waste disposal is one of the biggest problems faced by the modern world. And without realizing, each one of us adds to this problem everyday. Here are some facts that can help you imagine the magnitude of the problem.
¨ As per rough estimate, every individual produces about 25 tones of waste in his life time.
¨ At the present generation rate, the waste generated in 2002 will be double that of today.
¨ About 80% of the waste goes to landfill sites, which are fast depleting, putting pressure on land.
¨ 70% Indian cities lack adequate capacity to transport waste and also sanitary landfill sites.
WASTE SEGREGATION - an emerging necesity
With the quantity of waste generated growing at alarming rate, most of the developed countries are taking appropriate precautions and measures for proper waste disposable. And proper waste disposable begins with proper waste segregation. Both the government and civic bodies play an important role in initiating this process. In India too, the government has initiated various activities in this direction. The hazardous waste management and handling rules, 1989, lays specific guidelines for handling of different type of wastes, according to which waste segregation is the first step after collection.
Generally waste can be segregated broadly into three categories,
¨ Recyclable (for e.g. Paper, Disposable Glass, Aluminum Cans, PET Bottles, Clothes.)
¨ Bio Degradable e.g. Kitchen waste, garden waste etc.
¨ Hazardous e.g. adhesives, mothballs, pesticides, oil based paints, varnishes, chemicals Etc.
WHY SEGREGATION IS IMPORTANT?
Separation of waste is an essential process to protect the environment and maintain hygiene for all. It
¨ Reduces pressure on landfills.
¨ Facilities easier disposable of waste.
¨ Helps conversion of waste in valuable resources.
Must ask the government to
Must ask the government to privatise the "Healthy Enviornment Management". People must be incentivised to take care of the environment
