Olympics 2008

The equestrian disciplines are unique among Olympic sports, in the sense that men and women compete in the same conditions and the horse and rider are both declared Olympic medallists.

At the Olympics, horses should be the same nationality as their riders and each horse must be at least seven years and have (as runner) a certificate attesting to experience top international competition.

Rider and horse are regarded as a team. Years of systematic efforts are needed for the team to be able to perform adequately different exercises skill, speed, endurance and jumping. In all three equestrian events - dressage, jumping and complete - the aim is to create a harmonious partnership between horse and rider.

In jump, the rider of the horse riding and freedom, energy, skill and obedience are tested during a series of about 15 obstacles, including rails parallel, three bars, jumps water and stone walls within a period of time. Their goal is to make a 'clear' tour, avoiding penalty points because of a strike closing down, a refusal or death of an hour to complete the course.
