Sailing competition is managed in different classes, or types of vessels. In any race, only vessels of the same class competing against each other.
The classes of boats used for the Olympic Games are delivered single or double the hands of three people and can be either woman, man or open fields. The International Sailing Federation selects classes for each Olympic Games and classes are, and have changed over the years.
A new competition format will be used for the first time the 2008 Olympic Games. For each case, the sailing competition will consist of a series of opening and a medal race. Eleven races are scheduled for each event, except for the 49er class, for 16 races are scheduled. Of the 11 (16) races, 10 (15) are scheduled to open the series of races and another as a medal Race.
