POOR PEOPLE NEED NOT APPLY

POOR PEOPLE NEED NOT APPLY

Perhaps its the rule for escapist fantasy that the characters are all universally drawn from a rigidly limiting conception of beauty, particularly the supposed diversity within the exotic aesthetic. Maybe its the need to personify the concept of successful people by force-feeding the audience with yet more examples of vain men whom can prove their ethnic urban cultural loyalty by speaking entire sentences without pronouncing the last letter of most of the the words falling from their mouths.
Who cares? its the sex we want to see right? But wait, first it has to dressed up as something offering a pretense of revolution. behold, black women now, (as if they had never) have permission to explore human sexuality. (provided that one has missed the last 15 years of BET and any of the years of hypersexualized images from J-Lo to Beyonce one wouldn't logically imagine that, gasp, black women have been forced into some sort of socially oppressive convent.

Well the sex is delivered which for Cinemax is never quite as daring as let's say the Playboy channel and that's saying a lot. The books for which the series is based specializes itself by how willing the author was willing to literalize sex with total explicitness. As seen on TV, one quickly is exposed to the limitations against the same degree of explicitness, which was one of the "permissions" and "breaking the myth" aurgument that has made Zane popular. The series is an extremely watered-down version of the originals to the point of perplexity.
So to somehow validate the watered down sex, (as compared to the books)Communication, understanding and patience is given a much bigger role as to distinguish the series from the (truly vapid and incredibly improbable vanilla fluff characteristic of, well most of the late night softcore on Cinemax. In fact, the current series wants the audience to believe in the realism of couples with occasional issues, hang-ups and anxieties. so much that its willing to sacrifice the unabashed eroticism of the books (assuming instead that the sexual payoff will be automatically accepted after sitting through life lessons 101. Okay, that's fine, but the fact of the matter is that its going through so much trouble to sell this notion that it comes off a bit phoney.

Ultimately Zane Sex Chronicles is selling a fantasy dressed up vaguely as a loose social commentary that is attempting to mainstream urbania into a Bizzarro Madison Avenue sensibility. What you are not getting is the relateable quality manifested from the books. The cast is, I suppose to reflect diversity within a minority group, (Something actually achieved with better conviction on HBO's "The Wire".) But the cast isn't all that diverse in look or tone. The women are uniformly attractive, whatever variation they have is only of a restricted aesthetic type. But again, who cares?

We're speaking about a fantasy, not real life.

Maybe someday someone will come along with the courage to go places in the TV medium that was an open challenge by the books the series was based. So far, this has yet to occur.

I wish the show the best of luck despite its flaws. Overanalysis isn't always a good thing, for the show and indeed sometimes for those of us who comment on them

Lone Sloan Delirius I respect

Lone Sloan Delirius
I respect your opinion, but this isn't science fiction. If you pick apart EVERY piece of the show, sure...you will find flaws.

I am a fan of the books, but the shows are doing a good job holding their own. If you look at it from a different perspective, you will still see that this is still a great feat for Zane, Cinemax, and for Black/Minority Erotica. Of course the content is not as detailed as the books, and I am sure many people would wish for more, but we all understand why more cannot be given. That does not mean what is provided is lackluster itself.

In addition, to compare the diversity of this group to "The Wire" is quite fraudulent. The two shows featured two different groups of minorities and backgrounds.

Getting back to the show....I love the various groups of people who are featured in the stories, and it shows a range of women and men to where anyone can build a fantasy from watching, yet it offers a good level of taste when it comes to sensuality. Hooray to Cinemax for being the one to give this to us!
