olympic football history from wiki news
The football was not on the original modern Olympic Games program, perhaps unsurprisingly, that international football was in its infancy in 1896. However, some sources claim that an unofficial football tournament was held during the first competition, in which an Athens XI lost to a team representative Smyrna (Izmir), which was then part of the Ottoman Empire. Smyrna went to be beaten (15-0) by a team from Denmark. [1] However, it is difficult to determine if competition took place at all; Olympic historian Bill Mallon wrote: "implies a match between a Greek club and a Danish club took place. No source of 1896 and we believe it is a mistake that was committed in several texts. No match took place "[2].
Tournaments were played from 1900 to 1904 and games and interspersed Games of 1906, but they were challenged by different clubs and teams from scratch, and although the IOC considers whether the official Olympic events, they do are not recognized by FIFA. In 1906, teams from Britain, Germany, Austria, Netherlands and France have been withdrawn from an unofficial contest and left Denmark, Smyrna (one Armenian, two French and eight British), Athens and Thessaloniki club music competition. Denmark won the final against Smyrna 9-0.
