Introduction
A lunar eclipse is different from a solar eclipse in the relative positions of the three celestial bodies namely the earth, moon and sun. Considering that a solar eclipse is caused by the interruption of sight of the sun from the earth, the opposite is true in the case of a lunar eclipse. During a lunar eclipse the earth lies between the sun and moon on the same line as the sunlight is fully or partially blocked light of the moon. What we see is heavenly play of light and shadows as the earth and the moon do not generate light, but reflect the sun's rays.
Umbra and Penumbra
Before you can understand the concept of a lunar eclipse, let me explain the two terms: the shadow and darkness. These concern the shadows produced by celestial bodies when the light source is another celestial body and, therefore, is not concentrated at one point. This leads to the shadow of the body involved to be as shown in Figure 1 below. The region is the dark shadow while the other is darkness. There is another area called antumbra but we are not going to discuss here for the sake of simplicity.

The lunar eclipse
Now, if you see the above chart again and imagine that the light source is the sun and shadow object is the earth. If the moon is at the root of the land on or near an imaginary line joining the sun and the earth, it will be in the region of the shade or shade darkness. Depending on its location on earth, the lunar eclipse could be either partial eclipse, total eclipse or eclipse the darkness. We must not forget that from the viewpoint of an average person is only the first two which are visible, the third should be left for astronomers to admire, because the shadow of the earth in the darkness the region is not strong enough to cause a change in the illumination of the moon, which is easily visible to the naked eye.
